About Clapham Common
Clapham is an affluent residential suburb in South London. The areas around Clapham High Street and Clapham Junction generally attract twenty-and thirty-something buyers and renters, while Clapham Common draws families with its large houses with gardens in the Old Town and around Abbeville Road. Houses in Clapham Common are mainly Victorian and Georgian, but newly built homes are also available.
Clapham is three miles from central London in the London Borough of Lambeth. Transport links are excellent. Three stations on the Northern Line provide easy access to the city and the West End. There is also a London Overground station with trains to Canada Water and Clapham Junction. This is supplemented by an extensive bus network that takes you to all points of the compass.
And, of course, Clapham Common is at the heart of the local community. It is one of the largest open spaces in London and includes several playing fields, a children’s playground, a café and tennis courts.
Clapham High Street has a large Sainsbury’s, a Little Waitrose, and several independent grocery stores. The High Street, packed with bars and restaurants, is popular with the younger crowd in the evenings.
Some of the best restaurants are around Clapham Common. Trinity is an SW4 institution in the Old Town and recently earned a Michelin star. The Tim Bobbin is a gastro pub with a changing menu focusing on seasonal produce. There is also a branch of Megan’s, a popular spot for brunch, lunch and dinner.
Abbeville Road has a cluster of shops and restaurants, including the excellent Bistro Union and The Abbeville pub. You’ll also find a fishmonger, butcher and branch of Cook offering handmade frozen dishes.
Many families living in Clapham Common send their children to private schools. There are many options for preparatory schools, including Eaton House the Manor (co-ed, ages 2 to 13) and Parkgate (co-ed, ages 2 to 11), both in Clapham Common North Side. Emanuel (co-ed, ages 11 to 18) in Battersea Rise is the local private secondary school.
The area is known for its highly rated state primary schools, including St Mary’s RC on Crescent Lane and Macaulay CofE on Victoria Rise. Nearby state secondary schools judged outstanding include La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls’ School (girls, ages 1 to 18) and Harris Academy Battersea (co-ed, ages 11 to 18).
Clapham has excellent transport links. Three stations on the Northern Line, Clapham South, Clapham Common and Clapham North (all zone 2) provide easy access to the West End and the City. Clapham High Street station is on the London Overground with links to Canada Water (on the Jubilee Line), Shoreditch High Street, Highbury & Islington and Clapham Junction.
A network of bus routes takes you to all parts of the compass, including Clapham Junction and its links to Southern Mainline, Brighton Mainline and, of course, Gatwick Airport, which is just 40 minutes away.
The 220 acres of parkland that Clapham Common provides are almost unrivalled in London.
The common has a range of sporting facilities, including a running track, bowling green, cricket, football, rugby and Australian rules football pitches, and a popular skateboard park. All of which are interspersed with woodland and three elegant ponds.
