Things To Do

Clapham is an affluent residential suburb centred around Clapham High Street. Find modern Asian and European dining, gourmet burger and pizza spots, and food stalls at the weekly Venn Street Market. Cocktail bars with street-facing patios, wood-panelled pubs and lively nightclubs all contribute to a relaxed energy.

Clapham residents can take their pick of local supermarkets, with most of the large chains represented here. There are independent shops galore in Clapham. Look out for delicatessens, butchers, fishmongers, fashion, homewares, and gifts.

Many families in Clapham choose to educate their children privately. Many highly thought-of independent schools are nearby, including Eaton House, Parkgate House and Thomas’ Clapham.

In the state sector, sought-after primary schools include Clapham Manor, St Mary’s RC and Macaulay CofE. The “outstanding” local comprehensive schools are La Retraite RC (girls, ages 11 to 18) and Platanos (co-ed, ages 11 to 16) in Clapham Road. Further options exist for secondary schools in nearby Battersea and Balham, including Chestnut Grove (Balham) and Harris Academy Battersea.

Clapham has three tube stations (Clapham North, Clapham Common and Clapham South) on the Northern Line (Zone 2), providing easy access to the City, the West End and beyond. Clapham High Street is on the London Overground with links to Canada Water, Highbury & Islington and Clapham Junction.

This is supplemented by an extensive bus network that takes you to all points of the compass, including Clapham Junction and its links to Southern Mainline, Brighton Mainline and Gatwick Airport, which is just 40 minutes away.

The 220 acres of parkland that Clapham Common provides is almost unrivalled in London and is central to life in Clapham. The common has a range of sporting facilities, including a running track, bowling green, cricket, football, rugby and Australian rules football pitches, and a popular skateboard park. All of which are interspersed with woodland and three elegant ponds.

Clapham Leisure Centre has two swimming pools, a fully equipped gym and a fitness studio with a vast timetable of classes. There are also several privately run gyms and sporting clubs, including touch rugby, football, tennis, ultimate Frisbee and even Quidditch!
